Madera Canyon - South of Tucson Arizona

Madera canyon is in the Santa Rita mountain range about 25 mile south of Tucson and is a really great place to spend a day hiking. This Canyon is a beautifully forested area that looks nothing like the desert you drove from. With a higher altitude, shading, and a river, it tends to be much cooler than Tucson which can make it a great summer escape. There is a great 10 mile hike to the often snow capped summit of Mt. Wrightson with an elevation of nearly 10,000 ft. Mt. Wrightston is the highest mountain peak that you can see when looking south from Tucson. Year round hiking trails, picnic areas, birds & wildlife, and a campground make this a great Tucson destination.
