The Picacho Peak State Park is located about an hour north of Tucson and makes for a great day trip. This giant rock formation is the remains of an ancient volcano and is awe-inspiring to see.
You can actually climb to the very top although as you approach by car, you will wonder how on earth you can.
The park staff has made it accessible for climbing with marked trails and safety railings. Ropes are not required but you should be a capable climber to make the trek to the top.
Aside from the climb there are great hiking trails, desert flowers, picnic areas, RV sites, and a visitor shop loaded with souvenirs.
The summit of the peak offers some of the most sweeping and breathtaking views around. With a picnic lunch and a camera Picacho Peak makes a great day trip for the whole family.
Getting to the Picacho Peak is easy. Just take I-10 north out of Tucson for about 45 minutes. You will see Picacho Peak just off I-10. You can't miss it unless you have your eyes closed!!
