Need to get out for some exercise while on your stay in Tucson? Try the Rillito River Path. This is a beautifully maintained paved trail for walking, jogging, roller-blading, and cycling. The desert scenery is beautiful and glimpses of wildlife abound throughout. The trail is accessible from many access points with parking lots (see map below) and has water fountains and bathroom facilities along its 10-mile route. The Rillito River itself is normally just a dry riverbed wash most of the year but it serves as a major flood control system when there are torrential downpours. Also, in the spring when the mountain snows begin to melt you can see a nice controlled stream of water running though it and kids often inner-tubing or playing in the gentle flow. Most of the time however you can walk in the dry bed but on the few occasions when it is raging, stay clear! During the dry times you can see wildlife including coyotes meandering through its bed.
