The Sunset Crater Volcano is located just outside Flagstaff so it's a half day's drive outside of Tucson but it makes a great family trip if your going to the Grand Canyon or to Sedona or Flagstaff.
The park has massive lava flows hundreds of feet across that are shocking to see. They look like massive frozen rivers of jagged rocks.
The volcano cone itself is dark towering and stands out sharply against a crisp blue sky. This National Monument makes a great day trip.
